Summit Park Grade School (brief history)

By Evelyn Kitts

The first school built in Summit Park area was called Despard School which was built in 1916. The principal was Joseph James. In 1923 the Summit Park Jr. High School opened next to the Despard Grade School. Mr. James became the first principal of this new school. Later a grade school opened and became Summit Park Grade… School. The first principal was a Virginia Bauld. The school was closed in the spring of 1993. When the grade school closed the students then were bused to Nuttter Fort. The high school students had a choice of going to Liberty, R-W or W I. They were all later transferred to the new Robert C. Byrd High School.

I was not raised in Summit Park, but my three sons, Dave, Mike and Steve were, as was my husband Marty Thompson. I find this site very interesting.

  • I went to Summit Park Grade and Jr. High as both my sisters, Teresa and Brenda. It was a great community where we all knew every one!!
